The Second Yes

(Part 1)

She was twenty-five, he was twenty-nine.

It had been five years since their official break up. Two since they had actually stopped talking.
The relationship had lasted a glorious few months. She was always smiling, and was certain that he was too. She hadn’t known if it was fair to be that happy and ridiculously content with life. The days were brighter, the birds sung sweeter, food tasted better and everything was just right.

They broke up one morning. It wasn’t that fine. The morning.

It had been so sudden. One minute they had a silly disagreement on where they would like to settle in the world, and suddenly it was about the future.

“I’m thinking somewhere in the UK … maybe Scotland…or Ireland” she’d remarked dreamily

“You don’t want to come to Japan with me?”

“Erm…Japan…Ah” Well, she’d always known he wanted to go to Japan, but they had never spoken about the future. And suddenly putting it that way… She was just 19!

“Nothing. I was just kidding” he did NOT at all sound like he was kidding.

“You know actually Japan sounds interesting. We should talk about this sometime.” She said, trying to appease his obvious irritation.

“You know what, you’re right. We want different things. And yeah … my mother wouldn’t be happy about a girl from a different religion” he had said. “Let’s stop this when it’s still going good, and we don’t get too attached to each other or the idea of us” he had continued.

Words had buzzed around her. It was so sudden and too abrupt that she had numbly agreed. Too young and too hurt to shout and scream at him, ask him why he didn’t want to fight for them.

Maybe if he had, they wouldn’t have broken up.

Maybe if she had, they wouldn’t have broken up.

But they did. Just like that.

And they weren’t going to let a small thing like a break up come in-between their friendship. They were best friends after all.

She left to a different city to go to university to do her masters. They continued on, updated on each others’ lives 24/7. They sometimes laughed about the relationship that was. Sometimes pretended it never happened. Never spoke about the other men/ women in each others’ lives.

Both secretly wistfully wished what-if to themselves.

Yet, eventually, they moved on as best as they could. Or at least she did. They had felt so much closer after the relationship, than during, maybe because they knew they could overcome anything.
She was twenty, he was twenty-four.

She got done with university, came back home. With news that she had to move to a different city for her job. That’s when he had brought it up.

“Let's talk to our parents”

“About what?”

“About us”

“What about us…?” she had this sinking feeling in her stomach.

“Don’t you….aren’t we….?”

“You said we should end it…” she stammered

“You held on” – “Or so I thought”

She was speechless. Never in all those lonely nights at her hostel had she ever imagined this day might come. But it was during those lonely nights that she had slowly but definitely moved on from all the hurt, and learnt to accept him as a friend again.

“So you’ve moved on. And I was the only one stuck here, believing there is still hope like an idiot”

“It wasn’t like that….Oh God…”

She wept. He obviously hurt. But she hurt that she had really moved on, despite that, she loved him. She would always love him. But he had broken a part of her, that young gullible part of her that had believed that he was the rock that would always be there for her, one she could always rely on.

He was her best friend; that would never change.

Could he be more now?

Had it been so always… Just never spoken?

She couldn’t tell for sure. She lived with that doubt for a long while.

Much later, too much time later, she would realize that in retrospect, when she had gone off to university, apart from the once that he had seemed to express a tad bit of jealousy at the sudden inflow of men in her life – when he’d told her not to tell him about any of them, none of his otherwise behavior had ever indicated of anything more than rock solid friendship. There had never been a single “I love you” uttered or any romantic gestures. Yes, he had been there for her, but hadn’t he even before they had fallen in love?

Anyway, he didn’t give her the opportunity to even explore the possibility of more at this point. He immediately went into grieving, and she repaid her debt of being the sounding board.

It was in a way heartbreaking to watch him so, but yet again, he hadn’t fought for what could have been – he had waited so long apparently, and yet didn’t fight – so she let it go.

She moved to a different city on work. Just once did he lose his calm and tell her how difficult it was for him to be there alone, when he had thought it would just be 2 years of her being away. She quit and came back home not long after.  They were both again in the same city, and both working this time. They met often, spoke all the time, and were as close as ever. Closer than ever.

Time calmly went by for a while.
-

She had been twenty-two and him twenty-six

He had just got news that he was to work out of Netherlands for a couple of years. She cried. He consoled. They vowed that everything will be alright.

He went, and it was alright for quite a while. Almost.

It started off as small things. Having quit her fancy job for one that didn’t pay quite as much, she couldn’t afford frequent calls abroad. He still wanted to talk almost every day, and she didn’t feel right with him spending so much on calls to her. He didn’t want her compromising her sleep to accommodate to his time zone.

It was any small thing. Or just the unspoken pressure that her parents gave her to get married, one he was well aware of.

Things had changed between them now. Their conversations were as friends. But their fights were as ignored or jealous lovers. She knew at some level they both still wanted the same thing. She hinted at it many a time, and he replied cryptically all the time. And they were both too proud to admit it.
In the end, the pride won over their friendship… or more.

She told herself she couldn’t take the push and pull anymore. She told him the truth finally. She told him that she couldn’t be confused over him anymore. That she needed…probably they both needed to stop whatever it is that they were playing at. Both their families wanted them to get married soon, so they should just let it go.

She didn’t fight for him either.

And he didn’t reply to that email.
-

She was twenty-five, he was twenty-nine.

It had been five years since their official break up. Two since they had actually stopped talking.

During those two years, she had thought about him quite a bit. Sometimes it was often. Sometimes she went weeks without thinking of him. Sometimes even months. Sometimes everyday or every other day. She had long since deleted his number, so she could never check for his profile picture or any such thing. He had deleted his facebook account. Which was sad but she decided it was good for her.

He was her happiest memory of ever being in any relationship, and she had let him go too. And that was not good for her.

But a decision had been made. Communicated. Implemented. By both parties. Quite frustrating in one way, but such is the ways of men and women.

There were times when she missed him real bad. Hoped he missed her too. Wished she didn’t so much.

Things had been going in this way.

She didn’t like any of the boys her parents introduced. None of them felt right. Like it had with him, from the very beginning.

Those very thoughts (inspired by a vivid dream of him) had her itching to reach out to him. Someway, anyway possible!

It was his number which he used when back home that she tried first. Some lady picked up. Failed attempt. Undeterred, she e-mailed him. No response for almost a day. Her last and only option was to unblock him on the SNS and ping him there. Unblocking, she found that he was online.

5:02 pm :       Her         :“Hey…. There?”
5:03 pm :       Him        : (typing…)
                                     :Yes

( Part 3 )

Marry a woman who has expectations

Marry a woman who has expectations from the man she wants to marry
One who might even have conditions.
It shows she can think
It shows she wants good, someone who could be better
Someone she can give her best for
Marry a woman and not a girl
Trust me it makes a difference
Maybe a woman who has a girl in her, but a woman.
Marry a woman who knows what she wants
And what she doesn't
She might want a non-smoker, a funny guy or an educated guy
It's not because she is demanding
It's because she is clear about who would be the best fit for her
And is not going to waste anyone's time, letting them think otherwise
Marry a woman who can support herself
She's more fun to be with in the long run
Marry a woman who has adult problems
They are easier to deal with
Even when they fall apart, you'd know it's probably for a good reason
Marry a woman who may not want to stay with her in-laws
It doesn't mean she wouldn't love them
Just that she doesn't want to suddenly restart her life in a strange territory where she is outnumbered
It also means she is confident that she can take care of the both of you
Marry a woman who laughs often
In the end, it's the smiles and laughter that counts
Marry a woman who makes you smile
Even when she's not around, and you're just thinking of her
You know why :)

The First Yes

She was nineteen. He was twenty-three.

She was in love with him. Obviously. She didn’t know if he loved her back. She hoped he did. That would make things a whole lot easier. Her best friend could become her boyfriend, and it would become her perfect little world.

It was the age to dream after all.

She sometimes felt that he loved her back. She was certain he at the least felt strongly for her. But she was nineteen, at that was the age of uncertainty. And she knew that he didn’t believe that he would ever fall in love. Yet she hoped.

They did text each other all the time. If offered an extra hour, they would spend that talking to each other too.

Amidst all that conversation, she had never once plucked up the courage to ask him the one question that she wanted the answer to the most. “Do you love me too?” So they spoke about everything else, under and above the sun.

Until one day, he had to drop a female colleague late in the night. She waited till he had returned home, so they could chat before she slept. It was no more an option to sleep without doing so. During that much-awaited conversation. he seemed a little miffed… irritated with her. Very unlike his usual self. She chirped away nonetheless, enquiring about his day and the like. There was no chirping from his end, just mild one-word grunts.

“Is something the matter?” she finally gave in and asked

“No”

“Really?”

“Do you really not care?” Came his reply. She couldn’t gauge his mood from this text, though usually she was quite adept at it.

“I’m asking because I do. Is something wrong?”

“Do you really not care that I dropped a girl off alone at 11:00 pm?!” – So he wanted her to be jealous? A little sprout of hope sprang up, but she shushed it.

“Why would I be? She is just your colleague right?”

“Erm ….yes”

“Then..?”

“Aren’t you worried that it might be more?”

“With her?”

“Uh huh”

“Well, should I be ….Can I be?”

*Long Pause*

It was getting late and she was sleepy despite her heart racing.

This would have been a very awkward silence, had they been having this conversation face to face, an imp told her. She contemplated turning off her cell phone and going to bed. To hell with men. The light of her phone came on, signaling incoming text in the silent mode.

Sleepiness disappeared and the heart was now pounding away on over drive.

“…”

To hell with men!!! The voice in her head screamed. She was about to turn the damn thing off. The cell phone, not the voice in her head, when it lit up again.

“Yes”

The clock struck twelve.

Hah …. Can hearts beat faster than the speed of light? The sprout of hope was now a little sapling with shoots. She ignored it as best as she could.

“Yes…?”

“Yes you can be worried”

Followed immediately by another text from him: “No...I mean you don’t have to be worried… shoot”

She waited patiently. Knew he would be confusing his head, and finally decided to just ask.

“Do you …. You know?” was all she could manage

“Yes”

By myself

I sometimes wish
That I had a park near my house
Even a little one with a few big trees would do
With a small walkway
And a bench or two

If I were dreaming bigger
I'd wish for a stream or a river
Oh boy, that would be so much better!

I'd go for short walks
Or long ones
Or just sit around,
And watch the clouds pass by
Up over the highest branches
Where the leaves danced too

A little soft green grass would be nice
Where I could walk barefoot
Maybe even have a lie-down
When no one else was around

Wouldn't that be nice?

I could sit and write
And watch the birds be
Sing off key

And when it rained
I'd take my polka dot umbrella
And quickly run there
To have a leisurely stroll

It sure would be nice
To have a park or a stream,
Nearby, for me to just go dream :)
By myself

In his smile

Thursday, September 24, 2015

He was smiling.

A shy happy smile.

As he walked along.

She wondered if that’s how he had smiled when he had first met her.

When they had courted.

The kind of smile that melted hearts

Made girls wonder

Wish it were them that he was thinking about

Like she briefly wished then

As she wondered

Who he might be thinking about now

And if it were her that he was walking toward.

The Eyes

Saturday, August 15, 2015

The Eyes ...
When the eyes meet
Not all the time
Not everytime
Sometimes
Some eyes ..
Those that seek you out in a crowd
Or ones you accidentally spot
Strangers even
Sometimes

When those eyes meet
Thats where the mirth lies
And how the magic begins

All in a fraction of a second
Fractions
That take you from
Meeting
And beyond to knowing
And rarely
Preciously rarely
Beyond to understanding

Two seconds
Of two pairs of eyes meeting
Can convey a lot more
Than a thousand spoken words

But who's counting ?
Who's noticing the mirth and the magic
That sparkle
and just as quickly
Get supressed

He saw the mirth in mine
I felt the understanding in his
We knew the magic was there
I chose to look away

Would you jump in the well, if he did?!

Probably.

Man is a social animal.

We live in a world where people do the strangest weirdest things, because the society does it/ expects it of them/ appreciates it. A world where becoming an army man is seen as a thing of pride, when in actuality it is essentially standing in the line of fire. (I don’t have anything against soldiers, mind you. Because I live in a world, where one is taught to respect and admire soldiers.)

We live in a world where starvation, for as little a motivator as being thin – to fulfill the warped society’s idea of good looking , is practiced by many women, and quite a few men. Starvation, even if it sometimes leads to death. Actions that go against the most primary of instinct of self preservation. We would even go to that extent, for somebody else. Somebody who has no relation or connection to us!

A society need not be a continent, or even a nation. A society can be as few as 100 or even 10 people, who proclaim a certain culture and set of beliefs. Any group, which creates its own laws/ rules/ guidelines, no matter how detrimental to the persons of the society itself, that it might be.

So the next time, you think you’re being clever by asking “would you jump in the well, if he did?”

Well, if him, and her, and them too,

I would probably already be in the damned queue!

-
P.S: This is not a rage/ rebellion against any society/ group. As the author, I completely also agree that societies aid in the hum developmental and civilization process hugely, and do appreciate them. This is just merely an alternative line of thought.
